Leiden Orientalist, "aptly termed Graf's evangelist," who developed the source hypothesis and (per Wellhausen) freed it "from some relics of the old leaven of a mechanical separation of sources" (Wellhausen, Prolegomena, Introduction §2, Preface). His De Godsdienst van Israel (1869-70) advanced the developmental reconstruction of Israelite religion later systematized in the Prolegomena.
