Pupil of Eduard Reuss whose Die geschichtlichen Bücher des Alten Testaments (1866) argued the Levitical (Priestly) legislation was written only after the fall of Judah — the thesis that gave the "Grafian hypothesis" its name before Wellhausen synthesized it. Wellhausen credits Graf with reawakening De Wette's historical question (Wellhausen, Prolegomena, Introduction §§1, 3).
